Pre-Campaign Backstory

Reverence Valerian is from a disgraced Noble house in Archios. When she was born, the tiefling nature of her and her two brothers (Loyalty and Honor) was evidence that someone in their family had consorted with demons. Thusly, they were cast out, and stripped of their lands, titles, and privileges.

Their parents didn't live much longer, taken by disease and grief. This left Honor to take care of his two toddling siblings as best he could as they traveled from house to house of his paren't former servants.

When Reverence was old enough to watch Loyalty, the youngest, he began adventuring to support them. He came back beaten and bloodied numerous times, and as soon as she could, Reverence began to go with him to patch him up. From years of this, she learned a great deal about healing without magic. Setting bones, sewing wounds, and grinding together the right plants to make salves.

They worked together this way for several years, and when they found out he was a prodigy with magic, began saving to fund Loyalty's education at the Mage College.

When she was 18, she and Honor took on a quest from the nearby village to clear out a goblin encampment. When they arrived there were no goblins to be found and the situation felt wrong. Instructing her to stay back, Honor explored the encampment himself. He was ambushed and killed by a tall, dark-armored figure with blazing red eyes.

Reverence was rooted to the ground in fear, helpless to interfere as he was impaled on the creature's sword and lifted into the air. The figure dropped Honor's body to the side and made eye-contact, ordering her to run.

She fled as fast as she could until exhaustion took her. When she woke she had been taken in by the villagers, and after recovering, had to return without a body to tell Loyalty that Honor was dead.

From there, she tried to find work in the city, sleeping on the streets or sometimes in Loyalty's dorm room. After several weeks with no luck, she was approached by a stranger in an Inn who offered her a job if she would go on missions and investigate for him. His name was Sir Bernard, and he was collecting a group of people to investigate troubling news further north.

She was paid in advance and instructed to meet him at a city a few weeks away in two weeks time, and told to get her affairs in order. Upon arriving, she was introduced to Marie, a mysterious, charming fortune-teller who was to be her traveling companion. Together, the two set off to investigate for Bernard.



Personality

Reverence is a traumatized, well-intentioned girl who spent the majority of her time as a kid helping her brother, serving first as his healer, and then a sort of side-kick. She watched her brother die in front of her, and blames herself for not doing more. Survivor's guilt with a side of being the strong one, the reliable one.

She immediately attached to Marie, hoping to right her failure as a healer and supporter by keeping her safe.

Reverence struggles with self-doubt, never thinking she's good enough even when she does great things. She is quick to place credit on others, and only seeks to save as many people as she can, and kill the Vampire responsible for murdering her brother.
