Making a snap desicion, you throw yourself sideways, somersaulting through the air. You are on a direct trajectory for the portal, and your phone is a few meters away. If you can just lean a little more, and extend your arm- there! The phone smacks into your hand, and you're able to keep hold of it.
You don't have time to celebrate, because the low melodic call of the wintery portal has grown louder.
You land face-first in a snowdrift. It's freezing, and so deep you have to paw your way out like a child in a collapsed snow fort. It's wet and powdery, so cold it almost burns your bare hands. Your breath puffs out in front of you. Snow stretches as far as you can see, with a dark blotch of trees to the left along the horizon. Or at least, you think it's trees.
Snow falls slowly as you pick yourself up, wiping the snow off your phone. It seems okay, but you shove it in your jeans pocket. You wrap your arms around yourself as a gust of wind kicks up bits of snow, swirling it past your head.
It's cold, and you know how bad hypothermia can be. You look around for any form of safety or shelter.
The woods are within walking distance, but mountains rise to your right. The faintest trail of gray smoke lofts into the sky. It's a little further away -- but the idea of a fire sounds perfect right now. You need to get moving before you're too cold to go on.
